These sessions were developed for the 2025 IL WIC Training & Education Conference. They were recorded for staff that could not attend and will be used for the FFY26 NEP Training Activity 3. The purpose of this activity is to provide WIC staff with opportunities for annual job-specific WIC training.
1. WIC Risk Factor/VENA/Goal Setting – (Training time 1:03)
➢Purpose of Activity: To provide IL WIC staff training on assessment of risk factors and use of VENA centered counseling methods to assist WIC participants with desired health outcomes.
➢Objectives:
- Enhance WIC staff’s ability to identify and document WIC nutrition risk factors by increasing knowledge of assessment questions in their role of triggering risks within the IWIC System.
- Build on critical thinking to help staff pair participants triggered risks with nutrition education and referral process.
- Support the lessons learned from VENA principals to guide participant driven goals that build on strengths, knowledge, and capabilities.

2. WIC Customer Service: You Make the Difference – (Training time 1:00)
➢Purpose of Activity: To provide IL WIC staff with the skills to provide compassionate customer service, impacting WIC families that will keep them coming back.
➢Objectives:
- Identify strategies for maintaining professionalism when working with difficult participants.
- Recognize best practices for welcoming participants to WIC, both over the phone and in clinic.
- Understand the positive impact that empathy can have on a participant’s WIC experience.
➢Intended Audience: Coordinator, Coordinator/Certifier, CPA, L2 & L1 CPAA, FL, BFPCs
